For the past, oh, year or so, I’ve been letting my hair dry naturally–i.e., going to work with it wet and then letting it do its thing. (Classy.) My hair has a natural wave to it, and especially now that it’s longer, that’s actually how I prefer to wear it. If I could go dip my head in the ocean every morning to get those perfect beachy locks, I would.

That said, I’m too lazy to make morning beach trips, and I’m both too lazy and too klutzy to try to wield a curling iron or a blow dryer first thing in the morning. So my air-dried waves often look limp and kind of messy.

But! The other day I read this genius hair trick, and it’s been a game changer this week. You take a shower at night and blow dry your hair as usual. (I apply some of this cream, which also cuts drying time, then section mine off and kind of roughly dry it.) Then, once you’re done, pull your hair into the highest ponytail you can, wrap it into a bun and secure with a fabric hair tie (like an Emi-jay). Go to sleep, and when you wake up in the morning and brush it out, your hair will look great. In my case, my layers fell perfectly into place and everything was smooth and sleek. The only things that were a little wonky were my bangs–which I always start to grow out, then re-cut–but I just pinned those back with some bobbi pins, and then sprayed everything with some hairspray.

Seriously, best hair trick ever. And bonus: It’s taken time off my morning routine! Now I just shower with a cap on and my hair still in the bun, then brush it out after I’m done getting dressed. Easy peasy.

P.S. My favorite shampoo.
