September 11, 2015

The anniversary of September 11 always sneaks up on me; it’s hard to believe it’s been 14 years since that fateful morning. I was in biology lab in college when everything happened; when I got back to my dorm, all the girls from my hall gathered in a neighbor’s room and we watched the news coverage for hours. (I remember that my dad was doing consulting work at Disney World that day and I nervously wondered if the theme parks would be targeted in a follow-up attack–we just didn’t know what would happen next, you know?) And then, five years later, I moved to Sarasota and found out that our senior editor had been with President Bush at an elementary school here on the morning of the attacks. He wrote a piece about that experience that you can read here; we repost it every year and it always moves me.

Are you doing anything fun this weekend? Tomorrow morning I’m getting my hair cut, which I’m happy about–I love my stylist and going to the salon always feels like a treat. Also, we’re going to be working on our wedding invitations (!!!), so that’s super exciting.

Whatever you’re doing over the next few days, I hope it’s beautiful. Oh, and here are 10 fun links for your reading pleasure:

What a beautiful dress.

What a pretty backyard wedding.

Three words: Cinnamon roll pound cake.

And three more: Sweet potato gnocchi. I had a version of these at a press event the other night and I’m not lying when I say the chef’s version of the dish was one of the best things I’ve eaten in recent memory. So I’m trying to make this simpler version at home this weekend.

Three mantras to get you through anything.

Wise words from Jane Flanagan on “the intensity of a settled-in life.”
