The second I saw the trailer for the movie Chef, I knew I wanted to see it. So on a random night a few weeks ago, I dragged R. out to the movie theater, and we both loved it. The movie stars Jon Favreau as Carl Casper, a hotshot L.A. chef whose career is cut short thanks to a scathing review by a restaurant critic. As you might expect, after this major blow to his ego, Carl has to completely re-calibrate his life, and he does so by taking a cross-country road trip with his young son and his sous-chef (John Leguizamo, perfect in his part), during which he opens a food truck and rediscovers the joy of cooking, so to speak.
The film–directed by Favreau, too–also features cameos by Scarlett Johansson (meh), Robert Downey Jr. (hilarious, per usual) and Dustin Hoffman (excellent in his role as the owner of the restaurant where Casper worked). But what’s most memorable is all the food. A word to the wise, you guys: Do not go see this movie on an empty stomach. I craved grilled cheese for days after seeing it, and I’m pretty sure R. and I went home and snarfled down our dinners right afterward. Total food porn, in the best way.
Did you see this movie? Do you plan on it? Anything else you’ve watched and loved recently?
P.S. Two other foodie movies I love: Julie & Julia (with Amy Adams and Meryl Streep) and No Reservations (with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Nora Ephron).
