Last Wednesday sometime, I looked in the mirror and realized that the mascara I’d been using must have totally dried up, because it looked like I wasn’t wearing any. (“Why do I look dead-eyed?” I had, admittedly, wondered earlier in the week, but chalked it up to lack of sleep and busy-ness at work.) And guess what? When I inspected the tube later that evening, I was right: I thought I’d been brushing on mascara, but no makeup was actually being applied to my lashes.

Enter: The Hunt for New Mascara.

I’d been using Kevyn Aucoin’s “The Mascara Curling” mascara, a generous gift from a friend, and I liked it mostly because it coated my lashes with little tubes of mascara that were super easy to wash off at the end of the day (no makeup remover required). It didn’t really give me the length or volume I wanted, though, so running out of it was a good excuse for me to try something different.

I had a sample of Benefit’s “They’re Real!” mascara in my makeup bag, so I decided to try it first. And it was definitely an improvement: It gave me super-dark, full, thick, dramatic lashes (to the point where I almost felt like it was a bit too much for everyday wear). Unfortunately, it smudged, and I was left with weird little streaks of black around the bottom corner of my eye by the end of the day (probably not really that noticeable it was obvious to me). Also, it felt heavy–at least at first–and was hard to remove completely, even with eye makeup remover wipes–I’d take it off at night and then still have to use a wipe the next morning. That said, I’d recommend this mascara for special occasions because of the dramatic effect–just not for daily wear.

So then I decided to try Jouer’s “Everyday Effortless” mascara in brown, based on a recommendation from a beauty blog, and it was so much better–you can see the before and after above. It went on smoothly, without clumping; it felt light; the brown color makes it a little less dramatic; and it’s easy to layer, so you can build volume. Plus, it didn’t smudge and it was easy to take off. I really like it. I’ve never tried any makeup from Jouer before, so I had no idea what to expect, and I’m really pleased with this product–it’s definitely my new everyday fave. Here’s a silly photo of me wearing it Friday with my other new favorite beauty product–Stila “Stay All Day” liquid lipstick in Beso.

All this said, I know the mascara you use is a pretty personal choice–so what are your faves? I’d love to know!

In an effort to move away from the chemicals found in typical makeup brands I did a whole “clean makeup” journey that ended up with me using just 2 products on my face for everyday: RMS Beauty’s UnCover up as my concealer/foundation, and Kjaer Weis mascara, which I am absolutely in love with! The packaging is small, but the mascara will last a full 3 months of daily use before it starts drying out (you can push it to 4 months but you can really tell a difference), and the formula is very clean, smudge proof yet easy to remove, and the exterior sleeve is removable so you can cut down on waste. It isn’t cheap, but it’s by far the best mascara I’ve ever used! And the smaller brush size is perfect for my eyes as they are deep set, which means that normally I get mascara all over my brow bone and lash line if the brush is too thick, but with this brush I can apply the mascara right to my lash line.

Ooh, I’ll have to check out both of these! Thanks so much for your comment; I love talking makeup. And, like you, I’m totally willing to invest more in quality products–sometimes they make a huge difference!

Pretty lady! I love the look of the last mascara and the bright lip shine.

I am such a cheapo…my mom loves Estee Lauder and always receives gift with purchase bags from them. She doesn’t like their mascara and passes it on to me, and I LOVE it! I’ve actually never bought a full tube because I’ve had so many samples, haha, but I totally would otherwise.
