On staying organized (help!).

September 12, 2013

Friends, I need your advice: What are your favorite ways to stay organized? I’ve got a couple of new projects going on and I’m wondering if I’m working as efficiently as I could be. So far, Google Docs, phone reminders, Dropbox and my trusty (and beautiful) Rifle Paper Co. notebooks have been my saving graces, but I’m wondering: What are your favorite organizational apps, tips and tricks? I’d really, really love to know.

P.S. Remember this article, about how productive people get up insanely early? I am wondering if there’s something to that. Can any of you who do freelance projects while also working a full-time job chime in?

Favorite ST and LT To-List Tool for Personal Life Project Management: THINGS (download in the app store. I have the mobile and desktop)

Favorite Work To-List and Project Check List Tool: Workflowy (web-based and free)

I use Google Cal to schedule my personal life away. Like, down to the hour on weeknights so that I know what I’m doing if there’s alot in the queue. I also schedule rest to ensure that I take time for myself when the rest of the life is cray.

I think you’d LOVE Things for managing things.

    Cheers!

You are so welcome! Let me know how you like it! To be fair – A actually recommended Things to me years ago and I finally bit the bullet and bought it myself when my personal life needed serious managing earlier this year. Hope you love it!

The biggest reminder that has helped me is that, at a certain point, organization becomes procrastination. Find one system and commit to it completely instead of having several different systems going at once. Of course, I’m a hypocrite, because I use an exchange calendar, a paper planner (I can’t quit you, cute stationery products!), a white board to map projects at work, and a running to do list at home…

As for waking up early, that has definitely worked for me in the past. Now that I need to be out the door by 6:45-7am though, I’m not too crazy about getting up and going at 5. It’s worth a shot though; I’d give it two weeks of commitment and see how it works for you!
